A dental crown is designed to protect a damaged tooth for many years, but it won’t stay put forever. Sometimes eating something sticky, grinding your teeth, or even just the passage of time can loosen a crown until—pop—it falls off. While this is often considered a dental emergency, it’s not the end of the world. You just have to know what to do so you can make a plan! Keep reading to learn the five steps that will save your smile.
1. Find and Save the Crown
If your crown comes loose, don’t throw it away. Gently rinse it off and place it somewhere safe, like a small container or a sealed plastic bag. In many cases, your dentist can reuse the same crown if it’s still in good condition.
2. Protect Your Tooth
The exposed tooth underneath your crown is vulnerable to sensitivity, damage, and even infection. Until you see your dentist, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. If the tooth feels tender, you can use dental wax or temporary dental cement to cover and protect it. In a pinch, you can also use a small dollop of toothpaste to hold the crown in place temporarily.
3. Call Your Dentist
Even if your tooth doesn’t hurt, a lost crown should never be ignored. Call your dentist as soon as possible to schedule a repair or replacement. They’ll be able to check your tooth and restoration, clean them, and determine whether your crown can be reattached or if a new one is necessary.
4. Avoid DIY Fixes
For many patients, money is tight, and it can be tempting to try to save by using something like superglue to put your crown back on. But don’t! Household adhesives are not only toxic, but they can damage your tooth and make restoration much more difficult and expensive. Stick to the temporary fixes mentioned above and leave the permanent solutions to your dentist.
5. Take Care and Go to Yor Appointment
Until you see your dental team, you’ll need to be careful. Eat soft foods, brush gently, and rinse with warm salt water to keep the area clean. When the day of your appointment finally comes, don’t hesitate or skip it. Your dentist will be able to replace your restoration quickly, sometimes the same day if they use CEREC technology!
Losing a crown may feel stressful, but it’s usually a short-lived problem with professional care. Save your crown, protect your tooth, and get in touch with your dentist right away. With a good plan, your smile will be back in shape before you know it.
