Losing a dental crown is considered a dental emergency, but don’t panic! It’s not like getting cavities or gum disease. Your crown may have fallen out simply because it didn’t fit quite right, or because it’s worn down and needs replaced.

Regardless of the reason, your dentist will want to help you as soon as possible so you can go back to eating and talking as normal. Here’s what you should do in this urgent – but manageable! – situation.

Locate Your Crown

Losing a crown can be alarming, but remember that they can be repaired. If you manage to find your crown and take it your dentist’s, they may be able to re-cement it after making any necessary adjustments.

If you can’t find your crown, there’s a possibility you accidentally swallowed it! Fortunately, crowns typically pass without issue – though you will be needing a complete replacement.

Assess Your Mouth

It’s also important to check yourself for any injuries, swelling, or bleeding, especially if your crown fell out as a result of physical impact. Staunch blood with a soft, damp cloth, take pain relievers as necessary, and make note of any other abnormalities so you can report them to your dentist.

Calling Your Dentist

After taking care of your immediate needs, it’s time to call your dentist! Describe the situation to them in as much detail as possible. The better they understand what happened, the better they can help. Plus, they can provide first-aid advice over the phone if necessary.

Your dentist will try to see you for an emergency appointment promptly, but you may have to wait a few days. If so, take care not to chew with the tooth your crown was attached to. Without the crown there to protect it, it’s especially vulnerable and could be harmed by pressure or other stimulus. Ask your dentist if you can attempt to temporarily reattach your crown with dental cement or toothpaste.

Replacing Your Lost Crown

Obviously, going about your normal routine without a crown can be an inconvenience. If you need a complete replacement, it can take a week or two to receive your permanent restoration. For this reason, many patients choose CEREC crowns when available. Basically, CEREC is a machine that allows your dentist to fabricate customized crowns in-office. Since these crowns don’t need to be sent to a dental lab, patients can receive their permanent restoration on the same day as their appointment!

Losing a crown might certainly seem like a dramatic event, but with your dentist’s help, replacing or repairing it can be a smooth process. If all else fails, call your dentist’s office. Your dental team will be happy to assist you with your needs!
